Do we really need an SLR
Yes we do, it does bring out the clarity and an overall appeal of the picture.
But remember this if you have no sense of what will look good then no matter how expensive and SLR you may get you will never get good photographs.
All my pictures are taken by my Sony Digicam(8.1 MP, dont remember the model but its a w series) and my Sony Erricson Cybershot K550i phone.
It all comes to show that good photographs may not always necessarily be from a SLR.
But remember this if you have no sense of what will look good then no matter how expensive and SLR you may get you will never get good photographs.
